Next SPANC meeting

Hi Everyone,
This is a reminder that our second SPANC meeting is to be held next week. We have some interesting things to discuss with Nursing Week just around the corner. One of our goals is to put Peri-Anesthesia on the Sunnybrook "Map" and I think Nursing Week is one way that we can start working on this.
SPANC is not an exclusive club, we would like for everyone from all of the Peri-Anesthesia areas to feel comfortable each month to come and add their input into improving our quality of work life and making a real difference to the future of Peri-Anesthesia nursing at Sunnybrook.

There is a poll at the top right corner of this blog, please help decide when to hold our meeting next week. The more, the merrier!

Call for Posters

Hi Everyone,
Nursing Week is coming our way again soon. This year, I think it would be a great idea if each area within Peri-Anesthesia could come up with a poster that will be displayed in M1.
Let's let Sunnybrook know what we're all about!!!

Nursing week is May 12-16. Last year we held an impressive poster presentation featuring 45 posters created for national and international conferences. This year we are moving the venue to the M1 lobby to provide greater exposure of the nursing accomplishments to the public and staff throughout the week.

Please submit your interest in presenting your poster to frances.flint@sunnybrook.ca Include a 200 word abstract for the program.

The nursing week committee will select posters by program/theme and schedule times for you to allow everyone an opportunity to share their work throughout the week.

Another New PACU Nurse!

A Letter of Appreciation

I was a recent overnight patient at the SSSU and I just wanted to let you know that the nursing staff that were working during my stay were incredible!
Hopefully I've got all their names correct, but the ones I remember in particular were Debbie (two of them), Janette, Jackie, Kirsten and Maggie (Maggie in particular was excellent). The care I received from them was exceptional and made my ACL reconstruction recovery carefree and actually enjoyable.
Just wanted to let you know you have a wonderful team at the SSSU.

Journal Club-Artical #1

One thing I've realized since being in the role of Clinical Educator, is that at every interview that is held with potential new staff, one of the questions is "What have you done in the past two years to keep yourself current in your practice?" The correct responses include things such as, working on degree, attending conferences, workshops and in-services, and reading professional journals.

It got me thinking that one thing I'd like to promote on this blog is starting up a journal club. So, here's how it works: read the article and post a comment about what you agree/disagree with, your thoughts of how it affects your practice, did you like the article, is it relevant etc. If you come across an article that you'd like to share with the group, please forward it to me, and it will be posted.

Here is our first article. Let's see if we can get a discussion going!

Since last November, many new staff members have joined our team.

Joele Cuenca, an ER nurse from Markham -Stouffville Hospital, now working in PACU.

Lan Zhou who has transferred to PACU from D4ICU.

Clyde Vivares who has transferred to PACU from B5ICU.

Marcia Rose who moved to Toronto from Texas and is also a PACU hire.

S.P.A.N.C defined: see above

Purpose of S.P.A.N.C
*To re-implement a unit based council
*to identify the unique role of the Peri-anesthesia nurse and to help staff from other areas understand what it is that we do
*to create a collegial atmosphere for sharing our professional experiences with the subgroups of Peri-anesthesia
*to facilitate open discussion and priority of issues relating to professional practice, education and research that impact on the quality of our work life and affect positive outcomes for our patients and their families.

Open discussion:

Date and time of future S.P.A.N.C meeting reviewed. Decided that meetings will take place during the first week of each month, and shall occur after the SHSC Nursing Council which occurs the last Wednesday of each month. Exact time and place will fluctuate depending on needs of staff wishing to attend.

Recommendations to encourage staff representation at S.P.A.N.C meeting to be interdisciplinary as all roles serve to promote positive patient outcomes

In the long term, promotion of subgroups to meet the unique needs of individual nursing units in order to facilitate Best Practice Guidelines and Nursing Research.
Sunnybrook Nursing unit council discussed. Peri-anesthesia nurses encouraged to attend meeting. In addition, share findings with S.P.A.N.C. peer group.

Briefly reviewed notes from previous S.P.A.N.C meeting .2007. Focus on revising educational pamphlets to facilitate discharge planning. Mentioned the need for Physiotherapy to implement teaching re use of crutches on stairs for SDS. How can this be achieved? In-service for Nursing staff vs. Physiotherapist presence in SDS.

Visitor policy in PACU reviewed. Focus to develop guidelines to enhance patient/family and surgeon involvement.
