This blog is meant to be a place for Sunnybrook Peri-Anesthesia Nurses (Pre-Admission Centre, Same Day Surgery, Post Anesthetic Are Unit and Surgical Short Stay Unit) to stay in communication with each other and to be up-to-date with concerns regarding the Peri-Anesthesia Department. The Purpose of S.P.A.N.C is •To re-implement a unit based council •to identify the unique role of the Peri-anesthesia nurse and to help staff from other areas understand what it is that we do •to create a collegial atmosphere for sharing our professional experiences within the subgroups of Peri-anesthesia •to facilitate open discussion and priority of issues relating to professional practice, education and research that impact on the quality of our work life and thereby affect positive outcomes for our patients and their families.

Purpose of S.P.A.N.C
*To re-implement a unit based council

Open discussion:

Date and time of future S.P.A.N.C meeting reviewed. Decided that meetings will take place during the first week of each month, and shall occur after the SHSC Nursing Council which occurs the last Wednesday of each month. Exact time and place will fluctuate depending on needs of staff wishing to attend.

Recommendations to encourage staff representation at S.P.A.N.C meeting to be interdisciplinary as all roles serve to promote positive patient outcomes

In the long term, promotion of subgroups to meet the unique needs of individual nursing units in order to facilitate Best Practice Guidelines and Nursing Research.
Sunnybrook Nursing unit council discussed. Peri-anesthesia nurses encouraged to attend meeting. In addition, share findings with S.P.A.N.C. peer group.

Briefly reviewed notes from previous S.P.A.N.C meeting .2007. Focus on revising educational pamphlets to facilitate discharge planning. Mentioned the need for Physiotherapy to implement teaching re use of crutches on stairs for SDS. How can this be achieved? In-service for Nursing staff vs. Physiotherapist presence in SDS.

Visitor policy in PACU reviewed. Focus to develop guidelines to enhance patient/family and surgeon involvement.
